Research Interests

Dr. Susan Bradbury is a Professor of Community and Regional Planning at Iowa State University. She has over 30 years of experience as a planning academic having taught at Missouri State University, Eastern Washington University, and Florida Atlantic University before arriving at Iowa State University. She received a B.A. in Geography from McMaster University, and a Masters in Regional Planning and Resource Development from the University of Waterloo, and a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Florida.

Dr. Bradbury’s research interests focus on several areas including economic development, small town and rural planning, and Canada-U.S. trade and border security issues. As a result, Dr. Bradbury has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters and reports on these topics. In addition to her research, Dr. Bradbury teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on land use planning, economic development, small town planning, urban geography, and site development.  

Dr. Bradbury has served in several leadership positions including as President of the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. Dr. Bradbury currently serves on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Rural Steering Committee, and she recently completed a three-year term as a member of the Federal Reserve Board’s Community Advisory Council. She has been an active member of the Planning Accreditation Board’s site visitor pool, and in 2020 received the Planning Accreditation Board’s Outstanding Site Visitor Award. In 2017, Dr. Bradbury received Iowa State University’s Regents Award for Faculty Excellence.
